More importantly, there is absolutely no maintenance.the gel is their food and water as well as their habitat. To enrich our studies of insects, I ordered the Ant Gel Habitat for the classroom. I teach a class of very active first grade students. The gel tunnels did not collapse as sand will in a traditional ant farm. The kids and I were absolutely amazed by just watching the ants tunnel through the gel. I will definitely order this product again.
My kids are really enjoying this ant farm. One great feature is that you don't have to feed them or add any water; they eat the gel that they're digging in (although not enough so you would notice). It's been two weeks now, and the ants are still doing fine.
This is an interesting item. Come to realize that this is not a toy, this is a great item for anyone (not just kids) who are interested in observing things, you can actually look at the ants for a long time watching them working in there. I didn't know what to expect when I registered this for my son and I thought we would deal with it if he really gets it on Christmas, well, he did. It's amazing, we all love it.
I got this for my 9 year old Grandson and he just LOVES watching theants in it; a different kind of ant house but a good one. Thanks.
Not only is the gel their home, its also their food and water. The ants waste builds up and smears all over the top of the tunnels, and sticks to the sides of the farm. Also the used up gel that they bring to the top gets near overflowimg and there isnt any room left for more, so they may get lazy after a while. But all in all I would say.if you like any farms, go for it. So you don't have to worry about adding anything to the farm. This is a very interesting ant farm.Watch the ants dig out gel instead of dirt. The gel makes it stronger, and the tunnels will not cave in. You can also add more ants after the first set died, but you can't destroy the old tunnels, so the new ones just build onto the old ones. One down fall would be after a few weeks the plastic farm gets dirty. Because you can wash it out, let it dry and save it.
