I bought one of these for my 4 year old God-daughter and one for my 14 year old daughter. They both loved them. A very creative gift.
I would recommend getting this one over the one that is sold on TV. My kids and I look forward to seeing the catepillars grow everyday. This product is great. The one on tv only comes with 1 container of catepillars, this one comes with 2 and the pavillion is bigger. You get everything that you need to raise catepillars to adult butterflies. This product is a wonderful educational opportunity for children & adults.
This container for hatching butterflies looks great, but haven't used it yet since I'm waiting for the caterpillars to arrive. The cost seems high for such a simple item, and the caterpillars are extra. I imagine I will use it every year as a classroom teacher if it wears as well as it looks.
I think, however that they either need to include more food in the little cups, should make the cups wider, or they should put food more in the center so their frass doesn't restrict their access to food as much (most of the frass accummulates around the edges of the cup). Know that you will pay an extra $6.00 with the certificate to get 10 butterflies.To buy "refills" you will need to go to the insect lore website or another caterpillar selling website and that it will cost more then the amount on the certificate.And don't worry when you get the caterpillars and it looks like they're black, dead little hard things. They're not, just give them some time and they'll start to move. At the moment all 10 of my caterpillars have become pupas. Yet, they have all changed over and seem healthy.
Before they changed, they were eatting some of the paper under the cap of the cup, which you need. I am really enjoying this product. I should think this to be a great this to have in the classroom. I should have 10 butterflies next week and am so far happy with the product over all. And if they really are all dead you can return them and get a new batch (they come with a paper saying you can return them for new ones if there's a problem).I would recommend this product to anyone.
It works the same and I saved money. He is most pleased with this gift, and I am happy that I found this one so much cheaper than the one advertised on TV. The caterpillar people let me schedule the delivery so that the caterpillars arrived just a couple of days before his birthday. He is fascinated with them, and has started a butterfly bush for them. The are all alive and growing SO fast.
This is the only thing my son wanted for his seventh birthday. We will enjoy this all summer, thanks. Of course these will chrysalize long before the bush is grown, but I plan to order more caterpillars once these are grown into butterflies and we can have this fun all summer. He hasn't noticed the difference.
